Cover bystanders' faces before you post
ZapBlur finds faces in your street, cafe and trip photos and pixelates them automatically. Cover anything else by hand, from a license plate to a document. Photos are processed on your device.
Coming soon to the App Store and Google Play.
How it works
- 1Pick a photoChoose one photo with the system photo picker. ZapBlur does not ask for access to your whole photo library.
- 2Check what is coveredDetected faces start out covered. Tap a face you want to keep (a friend, or yourself) to turn it off. Place an oval or rectangle yourself over a face it missed, or over anything that is not a face.
- 3SaveBefore saving you see how much is covered, needs a second look, or is turned off. Your original stays untouched and the result is saved as a new photo.
Your privacy at a glance
- Stays on your device
- Photos, face positions, areas you cover by hand and your other edits never leave your device.
- Sent only if you allow it
- Usage stats and crash reports (app version, device model, OS version, etc.) go to Google Firebase. They do not include photos, faces or location. You choose on first launch and can change it in Settings.
- Sent regardless (Android)
- Google ML Kit, which finds the faces, may send device and app information, performance metrics and a per-installation ID to Google on its own. It does not include photos or faces, and the app cannot turn it off.
- Not used
- Ads, accounts, watermarks
Your photos and face data never leave your device. Only if you allow it, usage stats and crash reports (app version, device model, OS version) are sent to Google Firebase. Areas you cover by hand, and what is inside them, are not sent to a server either. On Android, though, Google ML Kit, which finds the faces, may send device and performance info whatever you choose.
FAQ
Can it cover things other than faces?
Yes, by hand. Place an oval or rectangle yourself over a license plate, a document, text on a screen or anything else. Only faces are found automatically. After covering, zoom in and check that nothing is still readable or recognizable.
Can covered areas be restored?
Depending on how an area is covered, it may still be recognizable, and weaker strengths are more likely to be. That is why ZapBlur does not offer very weak steps. Solid fill is the surest option.
What if it misses a face?
Small faces, side views, masks and sunglasses can be missed. The summary before saving flags what needs a second look. Cover a missed face by tapping it or placing an oval or rectangle yourself. This works even when no face is found at all.
Do you send my photos to a server?
No. Finding faces, covering them and saving all happen on your device. Areas you cover by hand, and what is inside them, are not sent either. Only if you allow it, usage stats and crash reports are sent to Google Firebase, and they do not include photos, faces or location. On Android, Google ML Kit, which finds the faces, may also send device and performance info on its own whatever you choose, and that does not include photos or faces.
Can I cover several photos at once?
No. You cover one photo at a time.
Does it hide the screen when I switch apps?
No, not yet. The photo you are editing may be visible in the recent apps list.
Will it become paid?
Right now every feature is free. We have no plan to make today's photo features paid, and if that changes we will announce it in advance and log the date. Safety features (blocking very weak strengths, covering detected faces by default, removing shooting info) will not become paid. The date and list are in the privacy policy appendix.
What about video?
ZapBlur currently supports photos only. A frame you captured from a video can be picked as a photo and covered.
